As far as I know, allinurl, allinanchor, allintext and allintitle display results according to what's in the URL, the anchor text pointing to pages, the text on the pages, and the Title text of the pages.

allinurl is useful for seeing how many pages Google has in its index for a URL; e.g. allinurl:www.domain.com

The others may be useful to see how a page is doing for those elements, and maybe comparing it with the competition, buit don't forget that other factors are used to rank pages, so the page at #1 for a certain allinanchor searchterm doesn't necessarily have the most links pointing at it with the search term in the link text. It may have alot of PR as well.

Ya know Phil. sometimes it seems like you and I are the only two on the Internet.

So does allintext just mean: who has the keyphrase on the page more than anyone else?

We are the only two, aren't we? I've just watched the end of the world, so we must be the only two left - and Google.

I doubt that very much. As far as I can make out, the pages that have the searchterm in the on-page text are ranked according to all of Google's ranking factors, but pages that don't have the searchterm on them are left out.

And it isn't a case of the more instances of the searchterm on a page, the better it ranks for the searchterm.

I think I see these tools now for what they are:
your normal SERPS with emphasis on the component of the search. So allintitle shows you who is winning the Title Wars, etc, etc.

You should probably strive for number one in all of them, just to be on the safe side. It also helps give you a better idea of the competition. If you find a searchterm with very few results for allintitle, you have probably found an area where you can excel quickly.

link: is a good way to see how your link architecture is affecting your PR. For example, likely you'll be trying to move PR about your pages in a specific manner. Links is a good way to watch for the results of this.

Allinurl is a good way to see the extent that your own - or other people's sites - are indexed by Google. This can be very important for link exchanges - especially when looking to see if the link exchange page is actually indexed. Some site links lists - through one reason or another - do not have their links pages visited. I saw this again yesterday when about to submit a site to a directory, that holds its links on pages with the dreaded "id=" in the URL. allinurl: confirmed that the site was barely indexed, and none of the links pages to boot.
