Question What does it mean ranking wise when this happens...

Hey everyone! I have a few sites recently ranked well, not spammed etc etc and recently I dropped off from page 1 to 500. All my backlinks are still viewable in google but If I type the name of the site it doesn't show up. If I search using the domain as the keyword it isn't #1 on the list, it's on the bottom of page 1.

What's going on here? This happened pre PR updated. I've been building more links to internal pages, anchor text is different most of the time.

Make sure of your target keyword, google updates and those changes may
affect your rankings in an instance. What you are doing now may not be
effective by tomorrow so my suggestion is check your targets and do it slowly
but sure for you to analyze what went wrong!

Do nothing. Sometimes this happens, webmasters panic and change items that do not need changing. Best advice is to sit back and wait a couple weeks then if there is still an issue it is worth spending time to look at. Waiting can be hard, but this is typically a situation that calls for it.

Thanks for the responses...only thing is this has been going on for a couple months, much before the update. The pages are pretty static so the content hasn't been updated. I'm wondering if that's the cause...I also noticed I didn't have a robots.txt setup.

try to search for yourdomainname.com. It should appear in the first position. If this is not happening then that means your website was penalized. In the last case wait several weeks b/c the penalty can be only temporary.

If your sites are fairly new it's fairly common. Otherwise there might be another reason. Updating the content of your site is by principle a healthy practice so I'd give it a go.

Are your sites hosted on a shared server?

If yes, problem could be with one of of the other sites hosted on that server. It could be linked to sites considered bad neighborhood by Google and google banned all sites there.

Honestly, I cringe when I read some posts around here. More than 50% of the sites hosted on the net are on shared servers.

Different domains / sites on shared servers have their own IP addresses, thats how the server knows where to send traffic. We would be in a world of trouble if a shared hosting company was using 1 IP address and just checking the HTTP headers to direct traffic.

Keep cringing because some servers share IP addresses with different websites.

ONE IP ADDRESS!! Can be shared by many websites. Cringer!

Do you still disagree with me Cringer? Steven_D!!!

yes and now im wondering how you managed to pass puberty.

I am aware that multiple sites can be hosted on one IP address, as per my comment about http headers being used to distribute traffic. I have a VPS server, with only 2 ips but 4 sites. I hope that your not implying that I didnt know that this was possible, because that would make you look pretty dumb.......

I was referring to your post saying

Where you are implying that if you buy a hosting account on a shared server, that you are not given your own IP address and that companies like gearhost etc use http headers to distribute traffic.

Different IP addresses are assigned to your account, so you may share the IP with your own domains, but then you would know if you were linking to a bad neighbor. Your post implies it is one of the other sites on the server.

If you rent shared hosting space and dont get your own IP address for your account or each individual domain then you have bigger problems than google not placing you in the SERPS where you want to be.

I think the problem with you is you imply too much and this leads to your cringing.

So finally you agree that it is possible.
