Are People Really THAT Stupid?

Everyone by now should be aware that Google is having a purge on sites that sell links. They are hitting these sites by manually cutting their PR and applying a penalty. However people are still posting on public forums that their website is offering links for $10 a month.

Do these people not realise what they are doing?

It is one thing to state, if you want a link on this site, email me and another to broadcast to the world, buy your links here.

So in other words. If I want my competitor's site to be penalized I simply state that I am the owner of the site and I want to sell links of my site for $10 a pop? Well I guess I have to create a couple of aliases and start posting away then!

I am sure you could try although saying you are selling links is not the problem, the problem would be advertising and then adding them.

Look what happened with the directory owners. They have been involved in a public discussion on DP for years. They speak daily about linking on each others homepages to manipulate PR. They participated in their own downfall and they can't even see it.

If you are advertising and selling links on a public forum and links are being added to your site, you cannot blame anyone other than yourself if Google take action. These people should be made to wear baseball caps with the words "NUGGET" embroided on the front.

One thing you can do is report people to Google for selling links, there is an online form readily available. This will scupper your competition if you are that kind of person/company.

I am not that kind of person. Not that I am planning on making a repeat thread about the stupidity of Google penalizing sites for selling links... It is just one of those topics that really angers me, Google should never have gone up that path. I agree with you though, webmasters should be more careful discussing the selling and trading of links.

totally agree its classic to look at the two diff types of posts

1. Buy my links
2. I got penalized

Its almost like some people are blissfully unaware of how many employees and resources Google has at its disposal to do what it wants however it wants.

I would imagine that they have broken down the task of penalizing people into sections, start with directories then move onto blogs. A lot could be gained by voiding the links in blogs. I dont mind the side links so much, but the links in the 'blog' are just getting way out of hand, half a page of text is filled with 15 links.

Its a pitty to because I liked the idea of blogs, I guess the problem with such a large community like the internet, there is to much space for abuse and because we are hidden behind screens there is no personal accountability, which is something I always believed was important in being successful.

I think this one can be done by a competitors site! Bombing is one of the way that a site can be hurt for that unfortunate site!

A good conversation here, makes a pleasant change.

I agree Google most probably have an investigation team in place, mind you I am sure they will not look at their own Enterprise Solutions page.

Like everything that is good on the internet it gets abused, why on earth should any blog contain a link? One word 'Money' So blogs will get hit, the next one then will probably be the social bookmarking networks.

I would like to see Google divided into 2 parts

Social
Business

With strict policies, not sure if this will ever happen, I hope so.

Basically what you are trying to say is that Google is NOT GOD.
