Websites disappearing

I keep a track of the top 30 websites for out main keyword everyday, and recently I have noticed that some websites that normally appear on the first few pages are not even in the top 100 results. When you search for the website directly they are still on google, so its not as if they have been taken of the engine completely.
Any ideas what causes this?

erm, I guess that could be an exaplanation but in most cases the website is back in the results within a couple of days and these are very established websites in a highly competitive market.

Will probably depend on what server you are connecting to.
If it's a back-up Google server while the other are updating you might get that.

Here are the results for this particular website over the last few days:
27th - 11
28th - 11
29th - 11
30th - 11
3rd - not in top 100
4th - not in top 100
5th - not in top 100
6th - 20
7th - not in top 100

It seems very strange that it ranks fairly well then disappears especially considering that other website in the top 30 only move a few places.

If you are doing link building, expect to have your ranking changed.
Anytime I get a new incoming link the website moves few places (not as bad as yours), than few days later moves back 1-2 lower or higher.

Also check incoming links where and what and make sure you are not connected to a bad neighbourhood.

It's ok this is not my website, so its not a major concern, but I do find it worrying that this can happen.
Whilst I value you point about positions changing based on incoming links I don't think this could be true for this website as it is a huge multinational company operating in a highly competitive market.

There could be few other reasons as:

too many changes too often made to the website
competition creating bad incoming links

just to mention a few...

Something like that happening is normal. Websites that are in a saturated market can change position many times a week

Another thing to look out for is the number of results returned.

My forum was number 1 from 11 million - now its number 1 from 3 million

8 million results/sites vanished.

This happens to some of our clients sites as well, but they were back to their old rankings (or even better in some cases) after a couple of days so no need to worry at this point

Changes in your search engine results can be due to the many of the factors that go into the Google algorithm. One of the things I have noticed happen to me is when sites that currently link to you change their site or do not archive material that your backlinks will dissappear which of course will make your score go lower. Also one of those issues can be the increasing use of "nofollow" links such as Wikipedia does. If Wikipedia shared a little love with legit websites then it would help the web overall but they don't. You can also dilute your own ranking by distributing your PageRank over your whole site via internal linking issues.
