Difference between Google and Alexa
Hi
I'm new here, and see some good advice.
I would like to know what is the difference between google PR and alexa ratings.
Some time I see a page with high google PR but rank very bad on alexa, and also the other way around.
Then also which one is the best to have, google PR or better ratings on alexa.
Thanks
Jakes

Both are useless.
Google PR is a historical measure of the quality and quantity of the links to a page (and may play a small role in a pages ranking)
Alexa ranking is based on the number of visitors to a site who have the Alexa toolbar installed (usually just the webmaster) and plays NO role in the ranking of a site.

U have better traffic numbers in Alexa than most of the sites ranked higher than mine in Google. I was always told that it was a backlink issue in Google but using my search term, I'm ranked 7th with 39 links recognuzed by Google and the sit in 1st place has 7 links/

Alexa ranking is worthless, lots of people using automated bots to increase their site rank.

Useless? Really..

The heart of our software is PageRank™, a system for ranking web pages developed by our founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University. And while we have dozens of engineers working to improve every aspect of Google on a daily basis, PageRank continues to play a central role in many of our web search tools.

from this link
PR is still useful since it is still part of Google's algorithm while alexa ranking is just an approximate computation of visitors (many online advertisers look in this alexa ranking)..
But don't rely on this two too much... Focus on SERPs and traffic....

Thanks for the advice coolguy27 and others. There is so much info on the net that you never know which to believe. Can you guys give me any advice on serp's or links for more advice.
I'm from South Africa and our internet community is small and still slow, but I want to build the biggest national internet shopping mall here. I have only one site that is in my way to achieve it when it come to traffic, so I want to build my traffic from the search engines, but everything you read on keywords just confuse me more, that is why I join this forum, seeing that there is some good advice here.

Hi
Another question, in alexa you get two figures one at the top to say where your site rank in the world, and some more right at the bottom that are more country specific.
Ok I know how lower the one at the top is the better, but the numbers at the bottom how do they work, the same as at the top?
Thanks
Jakes

Of course, PR is still important, BUT there is a big difference between the useless historical PR we get to see in the toolbar and the real internal PR that Google uses.

Alexa counts only the alexa users for ranking the website, hence not significantly a considerable analysis..
Whereas, a good PR reflects the website' authority, which inturn benefits at improving the Search rankings..
If you improve PR, you would get high rankings, thereby increased visitors, and offcourse Alexa would count the new visitors and increases the rankings..

First, PR measures the indexed backlink volume of each site from Google, Alexa measures the traffic of site by ranking it

I thought that good SERPs was reliant on Google. Why is PR so valued if it's worthless, especially considering good PR gives you great SERPs? Or am I missing something?

Google PR and Alexa rankings are two different way of ranking a website. Google PR is based on number of quality backlinks and Alexa rankings is based on number of visitors......

alexa ratings are useless. PR seems useful with the eyes of google only...

Alexa rank is really not accurate, its can be manipulated, it puts some sites in a much higher place because they have people who make their site seem popular. Google rank is more accurate because it is not relied on users, its relied more on content.
