How posting your link can hurt you

So how can posting your link actually hurt you?

Besides the obvious link spamming issue, if you are not very good at seo, you can actually knock yourself out of your placement.

Yes you can. The object is to have people click on your link and find what they are looking for not be tricked into going somewhere else. They'll just go to the next "real" site link in Google, that has the product or service they are looking for.

So I did something I would never advise my clients to do or anyone else. I posted a site link in this forum, in fact I spammed it in a post - but only one link is good.

Take this for example "custom closets central florida" in google. - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

This example shows the real site #1 and 2

And the link that you don't want to see in number #5. Obviously noone looking for custom closets is going to click on it, but you can knock yourself out if you did not know seo.

Over your head?

I have placed a worthless site link in this forum to make an example - I used a temp site and a business site I didn't care about.

So let's say your real site made number 10 and you post all over the internet - you are actually trying to knock your site out of the number ten position and may do it if you don't know what you're doing. And you don't want or you shouldn't want useless links.

The object is to get them to your site and take and action there, not go to a forum, article, etc and be pissed off by the engines because they didn't give them what they were looking for.

For some just getting up there is good enough - but it is a worthless link in google
This effect will be short lived ...... Google coders are working on it now.

Adding to the subject - hijacking my own post

If Google doesn't rush to fix the flaws in their engine Yahoo and MSN will not only over take them but Google will fade.

Both MSN and Yahoo have worked hard to give searchers what they want and seem to suceeding in weeding out spammers.

Let's take the same phrase in msn - http://search.live.com/results.aspx?...c=IE-SearchBox

MSN also gave the site number one but you'll notice no spam links placing high.

Yahoo on the other hand lists the site for that term #2 (and rightly so - there's only two pages and they are not complete) and no spam links very high. Yahoo may be making a comeback and waiting for searchers to become frustrated with Google.

I wouldn't sell my stock in Google yet, but if MSN aquires Yahoo, googles days are numbered. They have been focused on the short term money makers (like PR) while yahoo and MSN have focused on making their engines better and the long term approach will pay off.

Google's bean counters and sales-people are now running the show, while MSN and Yahoo continue to focus on solid programming.

Isn't that an advantage to your site because v7n is pointing a link to it?

Absolutely not - I don't want my client's to have a link going to someone elses site. I want people who are looking for a particular product or service to find the link and go directly to their site and keep them there until they take an action.

Why would I want someone going to v7, you think they are not going to just hit the back button and find a real site they were'nt tricked into going to?
