How important are back links?
You always hear people stressing the importance of links in relation to your ranking in google. I saw a site yesterday with a pr of 2 that beat out a site with a pr of 8 for the #1 spot. How can this happen? I saw this in Proogle. I won't mention the site, but is was a small site with very few links to it, and the site that got beat was the BBC.

It's quite easy. Internet-Marketing-Research.net (PR6) beats out Google (PR10) for "internet marketing research". PageRank isn't the only factor.

Good themed backlinks with good content relating to your keywords and you will be OK.
Links are importent but most people forget that content is just as important.
IMHO Theme is the key

Im still feel themed is better than unthemed and PR is not as important as it used to be.
I have seen many 7 and 8 sites rank lower than PR 5 and 6's

anchor text is more important than pagerank alone.
eventually themed will be way more important, and themed is better because it sends tons of direct traffic too, however today theme does not matter that much in the eyes of search engines (other than teoma of course)

I think most people realize that the anchor text is the most important thing, but miss the fact that anchor text, coupled with a high PR of the linking page, is the most powerful SEO tool out there.

When you refer to anchors, is it for inside links?
I am getting the impression I should go to everypage within my site, find text that relates to any other pages keywords, and turn it into a link. In my opinion, the thought of it actually makes me think it would be more user friendly.

Anchor Text can be used with any link either internal or external. In fact "Click Here" is anchor text.
The point is for Google to be able to tell what your link is relevant to the anchor text needs to be descriptive. What people are normally doing is using the most important keyword or search term for the page the link is pointing to as the anchor text for that link.

Trouble is finding the places to implement backlinks.
I was looking at some advertising sites (Informative based) for back links to my Online Classifieds. I figured that Classified Advertising would fit nicely on these types of pages. I only could find a few that were offering a link for a fee, and what a fee they ask.
While I don't mind investing some money to promote, I am becoming very skeptical over where to disperse my budget. Are there low key methods or strategies for getting some initial backlinks? I want to step things up, but I want to do it slowly. I have advertised on several directories already. Still not getting over the PR 4. In addition, I only seeing a slight difference from when I had a grey bar. Maybe 10 - 20 visitors from Google (Outside of Adwords). Generally, these are hits coming from searches for advertisements on my site. Not seeing anything for new keyword target yet.

Thats interesting Clasione. I was to your site prior, but did not notice the links to content. I believe I mentioned in a post here, trying to implement something similar, but you have taken it in-depth, much farther than I was considering.
I like the idea and the concept sounds good. However, with all do respect, I am a bit skeptical. I have an un-easy feeling about participating. I am not sure why, but I think the repetative mention of page rank focus is bothering.
Your site provides some clear and relative information but leading into the forum, I get the impression that it's a deception attempt. I am wondering what would be the end result if someone from Google or one of the other major search engines happen to stop bye for a visit.
I will keep an eye on the project, but I am just a bit nervous to partake. At the moment. I am just scrathing the surface with all this right now.
My current intentions is more for purchasing link space. Does someone have a directory structured site, where owners could announce webspace for sale.
In another forum someone sent me a link to a Broker site. I have yet to research any of these. I guess that is more of what I am seeking.

Thanks Clasione,
I think you got a good thing going there. I am just a bit to new at this and worried. I read about people getting their domain flagged here and there, it makes me even more nervous. However, don't count me out, you may see me in your forum soon. If the agenda was hidden, I would be in there right now.

I have a thought. Maybe the PR 7 and 8 pages aren't competing for the term you think they are at all.
