I didn't experience any fall in PageRank around the time of the October PR update by Google, but in late February 2008 I have seen many sites, including my own [link removed] SEO site experienced a drop in PageRank. I understand paid links can cause a site's PR to fall but I can confirm that no inbound links have been purchased and no outbound links have been sold. What other explanations are there for a drop in PR?

The One-and-Only Google Update Thread (March 2008)
We are into site maintenance for a medical transcription services website. We have been engaging in continuous link building efforts since the last one and a half months. As a result, the total backlink count of the site doubled from about 650 to nearly 1200. We also started ranking in the 1st page of Google for important keywords.
However, the recent Google PageRank(PR) update downgraded our PR from 4 to 3. This is in spite of the rise in the total number of backlinks for the site. How can this phenomenon be explained??

PR is about quality backlinks, if your site achieve more backlinks you can't say that almost or I should say all of your backlinks are quality links which give weight to PR increase...

Yeah it depends on where all these links are coming from...
You should make sure that most of these are coming from quality related sites...
Link building has many factors to consider and one of the most important factor of them all is "RELEVANCY"...

It's not meant that your site increases backlinks your PR also increases. PR is more on quality backlinks not quantity of backlinks.

During previous updates.. Backlinks updates is first then followed by PR a week after backlinks update... Previously, they constantly updating PR (on the green toolbar) on 3 to 4 months basis. But now we don't know when since they do it last february and almost everybody was surprised of what happened...
