Getting your site search bar to show in results? how?

I noticed when you google some terms the top result will not just display the standard site name and description, but sometimes that sites search box.

CollegeHumor.com's google example is here: http://www.google.com/search?um=1&hl...-8&sa=N&tab=iw

Is there a way to optimize for this to get your search bar to show up for terms you have top results on?

I think it is also paid advertisement. I know Collegehumor does pay for a lot of things.

The sites that display the site search box are chosen algorithmically based on metrics that measure how useful the search box is to users.

Noticed it a week ago for the first time, so far only visible for authority sites. Similar to how site links are only visible for a few selected sites.

This is paid function, its useful when you have a large database with tons of products. In their case products = videos, similar to youtube.

Where do you see it marketerd as a "paid function"

Thanks for all the info so far, any more input on this would be great as we optimize for things such as this.

Now the PROS and CONS?

Pros - More draw and immediate attraction to your site
Cons - May diminish page views and time on site as they utilize "Google" as the vertical search entry.

It's not paid, and some website owner that was algorithmically chosen to have that feature are not happy about it like amazon.

The problem, for some in the industry, is that when someone enters a term into that secondary search box, Google will display ads for competing sites, thereby profiting from ads it sells against the brand.

Read the article on teleporting. How do you get to be included in this list or is it all sites? Is this a paid service and does this not affect PR?

Thanks for all the replies to my initial reach out. I am sure we are all eager to see how this evolves and the effect on publishers. I wrote a blog post which I plan to keep expanding as this unravels: Google Release a New Search.
