Google is not for everybody!

Few days ago I met a businessman in Harvard Square, Harvard University Campus. He been in business for long long time. He does silver jewelry business. Few years back he got somebody do a cheesy website for him that sells those jewelry. He been struggling with that for years. He was looking for some help from me on his website.

During the conversation I asked him what advertising methods he uses. He said he uses Google AdWords. And only AdWords. I asked him how was the ROI (return of investment). He said with his last campaign spending 700+ dollars he got two orders of less then hundred dollars.

Whats wrong with this picture? ROI is really bad. Main problem with this gentleman's strategy is he was using something that needs some skills, which he does not have. Using ppc programs like AdWords need skills to pick the right keywords so they don't end up paying too much. Its a trial and error process picking the best performing keywords, discarding the non-performing keywords. While this may increase the sales a lot if done right, a business can also loose lot of money if done wrong.

Here are few suggestions to New PPC advertisers:
- Before you jump on PPC advertising like Google AdWords or so learn how it works and learn how you can maximize the ROI. All those systems offer a good amount of help pages, read them.
- If you can't do it, get help from people who can do it right.
- There are alternative advertising solutions like free classified ads. Explore if those advertising solutions can help you without spending much.

First of all you should build at least some links and see how it goes with natural traffic. Submit your site in 50-70 directories and wait when Google will index pages. You should have some traffic when people type long keywords.

Before saying that "Google isn't for everyone", it's worth looking into what sort of campaign he set up on Adwords. If he's simply attracting the wrong type of person to his website, then he's not going to get the sort of behaviour he's after.

Had a mate of mine running an Adwords campaign for a Joke Shop. He got lots of clicks from people looking to READ jokes and not actually spend any money on his products ...

Surely any search engine is right for anyone who wants an online presence, google included. Its a matter of getting your campaign right and getting the right message out there. If he did the website half heartedly, people will click on the adverts, but then not buy, this could be because the products are overpriced for the market (online) or perhaps the store did not look professional and therefore was not trusted by users. Getting them to click through is just the first step of the sales process.
