Long tail keywords are still important, less traffic but much easier to rank for and if you rank for enough of them you can get just as much traffic as a main keyword and your traffic is more stable as your site does not depend on ranking solely for one or two keywords.

Try to rank for popular keywords. Long tail you will get anyway.

I agree with that. One thing I have found though is people get discouraged when they start out trying to rank for popular keywords and see little to no results after 2 or 3 months. To help alleviate this I usually tell them to start out going after a few long tail phrases of 3 words or more, generally they will rank faster and start seeing a noticeable increase in traffic which keeps them wanting more.

I guess we all have our methods and it depends how much patience you have.

For websites with over 1000 content pages it is better to target popular keywords.
If you have little website - target long tail keywords.
