Hmm..many seem to think that it doesn't matter.
It has to matter, since Google was founded on this principle.
Do a wikipedia search on PageRank and you'll see the intricacies behind it.
Has this huge calculus looking formula to it as well.

I care more about my position in Search results more than PR.

Last Friday I was #12 for "Sacramento Weddings" (page 2)

TODAY I'm at #10 (page one, non-sponsored) for "Sacramento Weddings"

could be some big changes afoot in Google???

PageRank is one of the most misunderstood terms in internet world.

PageRank shows the importance of a website (or a page). That is, assume an internet with no search engines. Somebody started browsing net randomly. What is the probability that that user hits a specific website (specific page)? That is pagerank.

A pagerank of 10 is equivalent of a probability of 1. Meaning, there is a 100% chance that a random user will quickly hit into that site.

A pagerank of 0 means that there is very little or no chance that a random user will hit that site.

To summarize:
1) PageRank is a measure of the importance of a website

2) PageRank is a measure of probability that a given website will be hit by a random internet user.

3) When there are 10 matching pages found for a given search string, google will list them in the order of their pagerank. (Well, there are few more criteria for ordering, but pagerank is very important)

Algorithm

For your question:

Google has lot of other criteria for ranking the pages in addition to pagerank. But pagerank is very important.

Some other criteria that I know:
1) Relevance
2) Seniority (The page that first posted information related to a specific search term will most likely get ordered higher in search results).
3) Content depth

I agree with x3mario. Page rank is important factor if you want to exchange link to other site and can gain popularity to your site. SERP result and web traffic will give benefit to your site so as to be visible to the search engine and possible visitors to the site.
