here's a clearer view
google has about 3 dozens data center, if 1/4 of those get an algo update or a few changes are made and your site happened to be in those database then you will see major fluctuations.
a google algo change actually occurs when about 3/4 of those datacenters have achieved update status which usually can start and last from 6 months-2 years.
sometimes they just update 4 data centers, sometimes 6 data centers. sometimes they back up and returned the original state. we don't know what those damn engineers have been smoking but that gets your sites to dance the locomotion in the SERP's

Hello all,
Thanks for all your replies. I know that google rankings changes regularly on daily basis and also more than once in a day.
But every day it will not be significant like from top of first page to nowhere in top 100. Can anyone share if they came to know anything about recent updates with google. I need updates occured in last 20 days only.
I appreciate every one for replying.

google is harsh sometimes, Just remember if they can give it to ya they can take it away. Your rankings are never secured, always work for improvement..

some weird things have been going on today at Google:
1) in my best 3-word phrase ($$$-wise) : Sacramento Wedding DJs (went from #1 & #8 to #6 only).
2) in the other version (non-plural): "Sacramento Wedding DJ" (got #1 plus #7), yesterday it was #8 or #9 only.
3) in "Sacramento Weddings" --- Moved up to #12
4) Google Webmaster Tools is WAY BEHIND on updating crawl info. They last crawled on "May 6" but they have not yet updated the diagnostics to reflect the changes made to my site on May 1.
5) Google's link count is 2 weeks old. Usually, GWT updates this behind-the-scenes link count every 7 days or so.
Between the strange hiccups on the SERP, and the other weirdness...I'm expecting some PR changes very soon!

I find that because I have a lot of high quality links I rarely drop up or down like I've seen on all my other blogs. But my main site with most of the money and effort into it seems to keep on ranking high over the years. I highly recommend a yahoo dir link!

No complaints regarding this from me.
About four days ago one of my sites lost all its rankings. Late last night it came back with better positions. Keep working on quality content and link building. Your rankings will return...

From what I understand as Google makes updates there are going to be changes in rankings. This I also understand happens quite often.

The One-and-Only Google Update Thread (May 2008)
I'm seeing similar signs this morning but I think that this is in reaction to the effect Internetheaven reported above. ie a devaluation in internal links caused an overvaluation in low value external links. I've seen a few sites rise to the very top of Serps that seem to have done it through link buying and link exchanging with off topic and/or poor geo location sites. Those now seem to be dropping.
Also one site that, out of the blue, got sitelinks for a very competitive 2 word term where there is no way it should be top of serps never mind be given sitelinks for that term. I'm pretty sure that this was an indication that external outgoing links, with the right anchor text, was given an undue boost. Today they have lost sitelinks. Lets hope they don't get them back!
What I'm seeing this morning looks like they are either tweaking down the weight of external outgoing links and incoming links or turning internal link anchor weight back up a tad.

Focus on good, solid content consistently every day and let the chips fall where they may.
We went from a PR0 to PR3 last month and did nothing different (that we can think of). The same daily solid content to our target niche.
