you should have links in the signature of popular, big and used forums...

links from unrelated topic helps as long as that site is trusted by search engine and contains few links. but it is much better to get backlinks from related niche the combination of the two is better the only important thing is get the most backlink as possible and used your targeted keyword as your anchor text.

I would prefer quality over quantity also. which why I use blog comments and article submissions with 1 good link back from content submitted.
