I read that Google hardly shows any inlinks, if at all, while Yahoo still shows.
I believe MSN followed suit and didn't show due to competitive reasons.
Links can come from many places.
Article marketing is a good way!

Just keep on building links (ie. link baiting, forum posting, commenting, etc.) to regularly update your inlinks.

Try and get quality links , going where everyone has been, can lead to sudden drops in ranking (eg what happened to my ranking ?) quality , themed ( related to your topic ) links are are worth the effort and will show movement in serps.

maybe you know that Google shows only a few result that your site has than in Yahoo...to increase the number of backlinks to each respective SEs, just keep on link building, you'll see the results eventually.

Make your site content interesting enough for people to pay attention and to notice your site and in return they will post reference links to your site for others to see your content.

Keep in mind that Google only lists a fraction of what Yahoo shows.
Article marketing is a good way to get links.
That's what I do.

Build a site that people will love and want to return to again. If you get that part right, the rest will follow.

Don't think about number of links in google. You can be #1 in Google for your targeted keywords even you have less number of links in Google. #1 position in Google is all what you want to get targeted traffic.

I have to agree with you on that when I look at our new (12 backlinks only) forum
Search for: middle finger and see the proof of that
Over 5 millions pages and we are on page 2
What does it says to you?

1,000 low quality backlinks are not as good as one high quality relevant link. Focus on links that make sense and are strong!

If you just want traffic on your site link building is the best thing to do. But if you are targeting your keywords to be rank, you need to concentrate on your on page optimization by placing your keywords on your metas.

Link is a link is a link
1,000 "bad" backlins as good as 1,000 "good" backlinks ...
that is of course if you can define either of these 2 "categories" you are talking about

I think you are very right. Google does not show inlinks that easily, it shows only when they are from high PR relevant sites. But that does not mean that you do not have pages indexed in Google. And I have seen a similar trend in MSN too.
