Does google count backlinks in realtime as soon as they indexed? or only after the update for serps?

they update backlinks like 1 a month, some times more some times less.

some of the backlinks from powerful sites are included right into the ranking algorithm as soon as google finds the links.

when internet news linked into my site it changed what pages in my site google thought were important within less than 2 days

yes, that was the impression I had; the backlinks update is purely a visual thing, nothing more.

are you sure it isn't all links that's counted for the serps before the backlinks updates, though, not just the powerful sites?

i am sure all links have some effect, i have seen noticable effect from really powerful sites and a slightly less noticable effect from less powerful sites. the less powerful sites would have a smaller effect too.

also google needs to index the links and it may not spider deeply through unimporant sites very often. i think all count some almost immediately, but are weighed in more over time. also there might be a decent delay in Google finding the links on smaller sites.
