What are Backlinks?
Sorry for the newbie question. I see the term "backlinks" used but can't figure out what is meant by this. Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

more backlinks = site which is stronger conected in a large social network = more importan page = higher ranking

generally they line up in this fashion.
