Does this backlink count?

note: I changed the "." to "[dot]"

So who gets credit for the above link? sightquest or pinnacledisplays

sightquest is a directory that maintains a listing for you as long as you link back. does google give you any credit for their link?

appreciate any input.

When links are modified in that manner, IMO it's not worth exchanging links by suh a site. Google and co traditionally cannot read those links as backlinks to the target site, though that might not be strictly true all of the time.

Is there any legit reason for a link to be set up that way?

More to the point, is there any reason other than not having google see and count the link? Seems like sightquest would have a high PR (and it does) if lots of people link to it (thinking they get a backlink) but google doesn't see any... All inbound links, no outbound...

it is an effective way to scam link partners, but it also can be used for tracking and many database or directory scripts just happened to be built that way
