I have a client whose website used to have 80-100k visits per day (PR7). it's a book shop. the thing is that since the begining of this month the website traffic has gone down dramatically.
before, when you searched for specific book names, this website was on top of the SERPs all the time. but, suddenly, in a blink of an eye it appears on page 3 or 4.
the funny thing is that none of the website competitors are on the top of SERPs either. when you type the name of a book, google returns websites that does not have much to do with the book itself but just a short reference of the book. these websites have normally a very low PR and they do not offer much info about the book nor the author.
I suspect google is having problems with its algorhythm because they are not offering a good service to their users at all when they smake a search. i mean, if you type the name of a book, you expect to read either info about the book, info about the author or a site where you can buy it. and it does not show this at all anymore.
does anyone have some info about google changing its algorhythm again and giving more relevancy to other different elements? any idea or suggestion?
A big part of the algorithm has to do with how many quality backlinks your site has compared to these other sites. So, you can't just look at their page and compare it to yours and try to think about which is more relevant to make sense of this. You have to think about how many other related websites sites are "voting" for your website in the form of incoming links and how many are voting for your competition. Quality relevant links is more important now than anything else.
The sad thing is that they dont announced any major changes in their algo
Anyway, i believe that Google have a reason for this changes in SERPs happening on most of the sites now. Just keep alert from all Google's announcements and updates. Maybe it can help or at least give us some ideas about the changes happening.
I suggest to review your site from cover to cover and remember the last thing you've done into your site.

we have not made any changes in our site. i think that google is trying new methods to rank websites and maybe one of them is this kind of rate measuring how long people stay in a website. if an user click on your site from the page result and then click tha back button, this can be considered a penalty and thats why a lot of websites are going down... thats what i suspect.

im pretty sure this kind of method in ranking will not be use by Google. This can easily manipulate and it requires a lot of work to do in modifying its algorithm.

How long is it since the rankings have dropped? btw, fluctuations really happens but nobody knows when. The most advisable thing to do is to wait and continue what you're doing to rank the site. Of course follow the ethical stuffs
Google's algo change is just normal. It should be a continuous process in order to maintain the quality of their search results. Perhaps there are other factors that brought about the OP's predicament.
It is also possible that the more dominant sites in the SERPs (which offer less content) are doing more off page optimization. This is one fallback in Googles algo in weighing the offpage factors more than the onpage side of things.
As far as i know, only the +6 penalty is what Google really admit that exist as a BUG in their algorithm, but the other is just a MYTH.
the -950 filter is real too, Matt Cutts called it the "over optimisation" filter a while back. suddenly fill your site navigation full of your keywords and you'll see it close up quick enough
I have no clue. (I can't remember the name of the formula) but from my understanding they are looking at keywords like a human would. Let's say you use the word "Bill Gates" it would return sites with millionaire, Microsoft, computer in the text. (organic)
Then other possible words that would follow.
So if your site tells Google I have these words and google can't find them in your text, (not header) it bumps you. Needless to say "parked" site won't have these in their text. (or organics)

Very true,
Google uses a very advance way of comparing words on their synonyms.
