MS to purchase Google?

http://money.cnn.com/2003/10/31/tech...ex.htm?cnn=yes

found it rather interesting, if MS sets it's eyes on something it rarely does not achieve it

Surely they would not be allowed to merge. Both companies are way too big

Yeah, heard about that news as well. They posted it on Yahoo in Germany.
I hope that microsoft doesn't buy google, but according to the article posted on yahoo in Germany, google seems to be more focusing on going public then trying to sell to microsoft.

I don't think it matters either way. Google is still going to be Google whoever owns it.

This is a rehash of old news, It was reported a couple of months back that MS approaced Google and met with no success.

If you look at the situation Google are in right now with a potential 16 billion dollar IPO being mooted (and more importantly, via an internet auction which would put the stock into investors hands without going through the brokerage houses) it would be silly to sell before the IPO.

Phil:

I think you have underestimated the ability of MSN to screw up established companies they have taken over. IMO Google under MSN would be the best thing that could happen to Yahoo/Inktomi, etc.

It remains to be seen how Microsoft behave with Google. Certainly something to consider with trepidation. Google is one of those major internet hubs that were beyond Microsoft control. But if MS try to buy up majority shares then MS will suddenly dominate not just Google, but all those Google supplies results to - not least, Yahoo, AOL, and Netscape. I don't relish MS having that much control.

Then again, maybe recent moves by MSN are a sign of poising to buy.

Hehe, I hope MS buys Google. With Yahoo switching over to Inktomi, I need another source of traffic to make up for the lost Yahoo traffic, since I don't seem to get a stable grip on how Inktomi works...

Hi Marcel

Even if MSN were to take over Google (a move that I shudder to even contemplate) MSN 10% search share is not going to compensate for the 35% search share loss of Yahoo going over to Inktomi.

Better to get up to speed on Intomi optimization I think.

Might be a good topic for an article - John? Phil?

Just read in a Danish newspaper that Google has said no to Microsoft. They quote the NY Times. Haven't been able to find an article about it on http://www.nytimes.com/ online though.

I thought MS for building their own version of Google?
Did they realize that they couldn't do it and decided to go shopping instead?

I really hope Ms doens't acquire Google.

Because if it does .asp will get higher ranks than .php

They will do like they do with everything, give their own products the advantage.

Google is not going to be sold to MS... MSs LongHorn OS coming up in 2005 (or so MS sayz) is focusing on "throwing over Google" with yet another built in gimmic: internet searches built into the OS, so people do not go to search engine websites...
