that is funny how they would not want you to write for them anymore but go out of their way to quote your words...I seen that in the past, but it did not stick out so much to me as weird until right now.

Regarding the penalties thing.... I think there is a difference between penalising and promoting less. I agree that Google is unlikely to penalise for something beyond your control (eg backlinks), however it may be that they will one day consider certain types of backlinks to carry less weight. So rather than receiving a penalty, you are not receiving the full potential benefit.

Possibly just semantics, but probably worth clarifying anyway.
