Link building
I am going for a top 10 spot on the keywords "Funny Pictures" and "Humor" if possible.
My thoughest competitors in these keywords are:
for funny pictures www.allfunnypictures.com and Humor www.collegehumor.com
My funny picture site is
http://www.thehumorpage.com/funny-pictures.html
and for humor, http://www.thehumorpage.com
I might have a dissadvantage in regards to funny pictures in my domain, but as far as i can tell, mine seems a better SEO'd.
Is it possible for you experienced people to tell me if these sites are more or less search engine optimized than mine??
If it shows that these sites don't have an advantage in seo, is link building then the only thing i need to compete with these sites??
I hope none of the owners are here

link building is usually the ticket
make sure to use inner links with optimized text and get the best text you can when you get links from other people

Thank you awall.
Now, from what i have gathered from this forum, it is best to have one way links, since reprocial link (or what ever the name is) do not have the same PR value and having lots of outbound links will drain your PR.
Will it then be wise to have your link site on a sub domain or on a another server?? or is that penatilized in any way?
By they way, is anyone interested in telling me if those above mentioned sites have SEO advantages compared to me?

if you want your link exchange page to be completely isolated then register it under a proxy and serve it with a different host
perhaps you can make a funny site directory. list some sites free and exchange some with others.
also can you limit your sig link to 2
if the other sites are ranking above you for generic humor terms they do have an seo advantage over you and that advantage probably is linkage data

who cares about losing pr if you are going up in rankings
nobody cares about the pr of your site unless they are buying links , trading links, an seo in general
if you could mkae your site be number but you would have to have pr0 would you take it?

I am worried about the PR because i thought it was a factor in what rank you are. Meaning that higher PR pages mostly get ranked before the lower PR's if the copywriting is equaly good on both sites and targeting the same keywords. Of course i would chose to be rank one and give away all the PR, but i don't think that's a reality scenario. Obviously PR is of some importance, and i see no point in lowering it when you can keep it without affecting your ranking. It might be beneficial some day. That is if a site is not given value by outgoing links
Is there a rule only to have 2 links in the sig? If so, i will change it

thanks for changing your sig
pagerank does help some i would guess but good anchor text + pagerank is what really helps you

worry about your pr as a website woner to me is a waste of time , unless you invloved with selling seo services nobody really cares what the green toolbar says
I would say getting inbound links is good
worry about the green bar is bad

good luck ranking in the top 10 for "humor"
even "funny pictures" may be hard unless you've got some sort of resource to get enough inbound links
perhaps target something easier?

Thank you disgust.
Yes "Funny Pictures" is a pretty though search term. But i belive i can get some where with it. The only resource i have is time and i might even think about investing some money in it.
I don't have very much hope for "Humor", but a good feeling for "Funny Pictures"
I am currently constructing some other pages on way less competitive terms, but as long as i have time, i will not stop going after "Funny Pictures".
I believe it can be done in time. Lots of time =)

your site reminds me of ebaum's world! Two annoying pop-ups came up when I went to your site. Losing those would help for better user experience...... you only have the phrase "funny pictures" on the main page 7 times.... you have a fair amount of back links... keep it up... you'll show up! where do you show up now for thos terms on google, yahoo, and msn?

By posting your competitors urls you just gave them each a back link.
I clicked through on the first one, and then on the picture about drinking beer... very funny. Anyway...
Do very many people search for the phrase "funny pictures"?
I would not worry that much about pagerank but more about the incoming links. Lots of good advice in this post.
If you have the time, you can get a good ranking. It just takes a LOT of time. Spend the time, and diversify your strategy. google can always change its algo. Good luck.

Outbound links do not drain PR, they only dilute the amount of PR passed on to each of the outbound links on the page. No PR is ever taken away from a page, unless it links to a site Google has banned, and it's rare that Google ban's a site.

Thanks for the replies.
To Tozzo.
I can't understand how 2 pop-ups would appear from my site. I know i haven't installed any advertisements of any sort. Must be from somewhere elso, or someone has hacked my site. It just got indexed by Google a week ago, so i don't show up anywhere notable yet.
The wordtracker tool shows that 27.000 searches are made on funny pictures a day! and Overure shows about 550.000 a month.

collegehumor.com is a huge organisation. We did some hosting with the guy who runs it not so long back - they sent over 70,000 hits within a couple of months.
I'd say they have the money to hire experts in the field to keep them at the top. Also - designs of both r a lil better - maybe you could look at that. Its all well and good getting people to your page - but you gotta keep them there, then get them to come back also!

Thank you oldsocs
I will not consentrate so very much about the keyword humor now i think. Other than to build it up with time. I will try and focus on Funny Pictures.
I do agree that their designs are better, but i think mine is a lot more user friendly and loads a lot faster, but i have talked to a friend of mine who's in the business of website design to look at it.
