Excluding selected links from ranking should be legal and supported by a FOLLOW="_no" option for the <A tag.

It shall be possible for man, the designer, to put intelligence in voting for sites. Even a percentual value shouls be allowed: FOLLOW="10" means this link gets 10 units in relation to the total amount of used units for all links on the page.

Currently, does a document.write('<a href" ... </a>') insted of a link work right now to channel ranking? This should be legal. A lot of menus use such anyway.

first off the whole issue of legal vs illegal is one of a personal lack of understanding on your behalf.

you can put links through a redirect if you want to stop parsing link value outward.

googlebot has a test spider following some java links, but java is not usually counted in backlinks.

as far as the # or rating system, that effect is currently best portrayed by what text you use to link to a site.
