Does a 301 redirect transfer PR immediately?

We have a few pages that we don't need that have a PR rating. We have some new pages that have a PR0, and we'd rather not wait 2 months to get it. Does anyone know from recent exerience if a 301 redirect will transfer the google PR immediately, or at least in a day or two, or only in a month or two when the new page would get a PR rank anyway?

PR doesn't get updated immediately, so how could you tell?

not sure what you mean, but I mean the google tool bar. On older pages, it shows a PR value, on new pages it shows PR0. If we redirect an old page to the new page, will the old page PR show up on the new page (after google spiders the redirect, of course, which could take a few days I realize. Does that make sense. Would the new page show PR after a few days, or not until the next google PR update (which can be several weeks or more). It would get a PR rating on the next update anyway, which renders the 301 redirect for transfering PR a waste of time (assuming that is the only reason we have the redirect).

Again, would the PR show up on the new page in a few days, and would we not have to wait for the general PR update which seems to take forever...

I have read some information talking about this. From what I understand it has receantly become a concern to Google, however I think it was purely biased information.

The information that I read was stating to buy closed domains when they are expired, that have a high PR. Once you get the domain redirect it to your current page and the PR passes.

The thing I though when I read it, was why in the world would somoene let a domain shut down that is doing well. If you have a PR, where lots of traffic is coming from the Search Engines, you could easily make money from advertising alone.

I never tried, but give it a shot, let us know how you make out with it if you would.

It definately transfers...usually just one update. I have an online pharmacy that does pretty well, all I ever did to promote it was redirect an expired PR3 to it and it's been a 3 ever since.
It might help if the redirected domain is in the same scope of topic. In this case I redirected a pharmaceutical domain to a pharmacy and it worked beautifully.

If you don't mind answering something, like I mentioned above, why are these domains available?

I know that might be an awkward question (Because they expired). I just can't imagine letting something expire that was doing well. Are they shut down because of something like Spam in some cases, or are all these just expired domains?

I wasn't talking about redirecting one domain to another, which sounds like a temporary solution and potentially spammy.
I was talking about an old page on our domain, and redirecting it to a new page on our same domain. Does the PR transfer within a few days, or not until the next google update.
Sounds like I may have to try it and see...

Understood Jacksdad,

I don't think PR ever transfers immediately. It seems to happen on my sites about every month, but this is something I only been paying attention to for about two or three months now.

Generally, when you start reading posts about a deep crawl, or notice your site getting hit heavilly by a Google bot, you will see a new PR rating shortly following.

I would setup the transfer, and then go check the URL to see. But I can't imagine that taking place until the Google Database is physically updated.

perminant 301 redirects are not considered spammy and they work the same internally as externally
