Illustrator background help

I am currently working on a background for a website of mine, and i have to say, im ready to start hurting my computer,

i recently lost application i used to use often to make complex backgrounds, and i dont think it is made anymore, so i moved to trying

Illustrator cs3, which of course my experience is making logos etc, not somthing that is a little more complex

so if anyone is willing to help or tell me what im doing wrong and how to do it right it will be appreciated

the background colour compination i have dubbed "carnival of terror"

and i am trying to make the edges and sides fade into far darker or black shade, but when i attempt to do this in illustrator the results are the fade effect is diffrent in the stripes and the background colour, as well as a 3rd onwanted colour effect of a far lighter centre or mid centre circle

in short very nasty
