As well as picking up a book and posting on boards, you really should get some practical skills in as well, it might be worth your time contacting a company about doing some basic design work for them just to hone your skills, for example, find a company that needs some promo banners and graphics done and offer your services to them at a highly discounted rate just to get the experience you need on the practical side of things.

The added benfit of this is that you can also add these designs to your portfolio which should help you in the future with getting new design clients

I would first suggest getting the basic programs.
Then reading up some books and doing tutorials.
But it is always good to do a course and have it on paper.

I suggest you acquire the basics by taking up graphic design course. This will help you become familiar with all details and necessities in graphic designing. Then the idea of applying your basic skills for on job training would also be great. This serves as your stepping stone.

Copy, copy, copy.

You should find some images on the internet that you find appealing and bring them into your favorite graphics program (i.e. Photoshop for raster and Illustrator for vector) and try to copy them exactly as they are. This will give you the skills to learn the software as well as learn great design principles. This technique goes back to ancient times (i.e. light room).

Good luck to you.

What I tell people that are interested is get the programs.. if you can afford Adobe Photoshop and do searches on Google on Photoshop tutorials and practice practice practice... I was never taught by anyone and my best way of learning is hands on.. I find videos sometimes easier than reading.. but everyone is different.. The best of luck to you!
