Graphics for printing

Hello everyone,

my topic is not going to save this forum, but can help me a lot ;).

My brother ask me to do advertisment for his restaurant to local newspapers and becuase I did his websites (www.stara-skola.cz - in case you would like to see it) I thought I can do this too. Well, generally I can, but there are - as you know- some important differences between print and web. And that is where I get lost.

Can you please advice me what and how I should take care of when I prepare design for print (resolution, color mode, final printing size etc.) I am confused about it (also afraid to corrupt this ad) and I would really appreciate your help.

Also, any comments on ad itself are more that welcome.

Thanks a lot,
David

for a newspaper

images has to be around 120-144 dpi

color space is CMYK

make sure that you supply the fonts used in the ad or convert fonts so that it isent text anymore

about the size it proberly have to fit with a specific amount of colums

the file format depends, pdf, quarkxpress, eps, tiff

my best advice is to ask the newspaper the same questions and what format they want

Guidelines for Print

Most companies will have different prepress guidelines based on their equipment and what they can handle. Here is typically what is recommended.
  • Page layout should be in QuarkExpress in a document size of the final printed piece.
  • All associated vector-art files (illustrator files) in EPS format. Make sure the image color mode is set to CMYK.
  • All associated bitmap files (photoshop files) in either TIFF or Photoshop EPS with binary encoding. Do not save a photoshop EPS w/JPEG encoding (the color will not separate properly). The resolution should be 300 dpi (original scan). Do not scan an image and then convert it to 300 dpi.
  • All fonts used in the document should be included when sending artwork to press
As mentioned before these are guidelines most printers prefer. I also suggest you talk to your print shop/newspaper and ask them for a guidelines sheet.

errhhm not accurate, depends on what the LPI (linnes per inch) the final is.

we are talking about a newspaper here and that is usually 85 LPI (raster frequency), the rule of tumb is DPI = 1.4 (up to 2) X LPI, so for a newspaper it would be 120 (up to 170) DPI, 1.4 x 85 = 120 (personally I think 1.4 dosent give the best quality, I would go for 1.7)

the reasson you dont want 300 dpi on a 85 lpi print is because of the rip-time.

This is why it's best to contact the newspaper/print shop to get and use their guidelines because in Minneapolis some newspapers prefer a 300 dpi "press quality" PDF file. The use a digital press for their newspapers.

Every printing company I've ever talked to ask for a 300 dpi file. I guess its easier for them to lower the dpi than raise it.

This is just for CD printing/business cards/flyers though, never printed with a newspaper
