Open a blank transparent canvas. Paste the picture onto a new layer. Click the layer mask button. Paint black over the background. It will dissapear.
or
Open a blank transparent canvas. Select the part of the image you want to keep using the selection tool. Go to select -> inverse. Hit delete.

Now I have another problem. I typed in text on the image but of course it goes on as another layer without you doing that. Anyway when I try to drag image over into another one it only moves the text and not the image. Of course that is after saving it. What do I do about that?

link the images that you want moved together, in the layers palate by clicking in the small square to the left of the layer. A chain link icon will appear. Then the ones you have a chain link icon next to will move together. This only works if you've saved it as a psd. Saving as a psd saves the layers seperately so that they can be worked with at a future time.. Once you save as jpg or gif the layers are combined and not present seperately anymore, so you should always save as a psd as well as jpg or gif. (save it twice)

there is an "eye" icon in one of the 2 squares next to each layer.... click the "other" square, next to the eye one, and a chain link icon will appear.

When I click on the square next to the eye nothing at all happens. Just a little hand for the mouse over top the square.

That means it's too late ,,, you don't have a psd.... you have a jpg or gif most likely...
after you build layers, you need to file/save as/psd
What you have already done will not be in seperate layers anymore after you close the program if you choose "no", what you do is choose "yes" when prompted at closing, Xing out of an image you've worked on in PS will bring you to the same window as "file/save as" does ... but make sure it says psd in the save window.. if it doesn't say psd, click the drop down and choose psd before clicking ok... you will then be able to open that image in the future in PS, and have all the seperate layers present.

No because it's too late... you have to start doing something to it again and then you'll have the option of saving everything you do in layers, if you save as psd, but what you've already done was not saved as a psd, so it's lost. The only thing you have now is the "combined result" of your layers, and it's not seperable anymore because you didn't save a copy as a psd.
