I do not know how it's supposed to be done. Anything I do in PS is the way I think it should be done using my knowledge of what the tools do, and what I can do with them. I never, ever, follow or even read tutorials, so you may want to consult one. Anyway ... I simply chose a gray bkg, then made a circle with the eliptical tool and copy/paste and chose a lighter gray for it, then used the magic eraser tool to erase the white bkg of the cat, then dragged the cat onto the light gray circle, then reduced the opacity of the light gray circle, then made a white circle and diffused it's borders with a plugin called eyecandy/corona, then I duplicated that layer and placed it lower and to the left, then used the smudge tool to elongate and make it overlap onto the cat's body.
That's about it.
<edit> I forgot, I also made a slight gradient on the light gray circle, and in fact, and now that I think about it ... I don't believe I positioned the reflections properly per the gradient angle .. lol ..
also, if I was being meticulous, I would have added the whiskers and set them to the proper opacity. Seems they disappeared when I removed the white bkg, or maybe they just blend with the gray too well. I didn't even notice that they had disappeared until I had finished and posted it.. lol
oh well..

No, I mentioned that I used the eliptical tool to make it. I do very little freehand drawing, there's no need to, and most of the freehand work that I do is actually eraser sculpting and not drawing. I don't draw that well so, thankfully it's seldom necessary with PS.
Some prefer freehand drawing though, and are decent at it.

Whoops, sorry... I left out a word, it's eliptical 'marquee' tool.
That looks good, Imaginemn. Like a crystal ball.

I cant figure out how you did the copy/paste lighter grey for circle Atom. I tried clicking in the color selecter than ctrl c and ctrl v and eleptical disapears. Although I do notice in layer selector there is two layers and one shows a circle with grey middle and transparent bg. The first layer is just a grey bg. What am I doing wrong?

I like those. Something between yours and imaginemn.
But back to my problem I think I figured that out. Now I have a dark grey bg and light circle with cat inside that. Is that how it should be? Also where do I locate the opacity tool? Stupid question I know.

Well I can remove my shine patches and replace them with a more defined cresent shine, like he's got, or actually there are some better shine shape alternatives... I'd have to take some time to choose the best one.
Doc.... you are trying to accomplish a project before you even know how to use the tools. You honestly need to keep fooling with all the tools relentlessly, on your own, and then things will begin to flow, but the key word is relentless. I don't believe that you have put in even close to enough hours of personal experimentation to execute a decent project. If you think it's going to happen quickly, you're wrong, it won't... it really takes some time before things will flow to the point where you don't need tuts or anyone's help to just sit down and create acceptable and usable graphics.
Read the "help/photoshop help" sections, please, and whenever you have a question... refer to that and use the index in there, or glossary or w/e they call it... index I think. That will answer very simple questions such as where the opacity adjustments are and much more.

Drag out a circle w/the eliptical marquee tool onto a grey bkg. edit/copy/edit/paste/image/adjustments/brightness contrast/slide the brightness slider up a bit/
...that's one way.

Actually, you don't happen to have eyecandy or KPT do you?
I would look for eyecandy at emule or somewhere and download it and add it as a PS plugin.
Or you could search for a simple sphere tutorial.

Well it's true, because you're asking me to do logos and stuff for you for free and I would much rather either at least get paid, or even better yet, see you learn to do them yourself. But it's going to take time and persistence.
Visit Jazzee's link there and look for a sphere tutorial. You may be able to do this better than any of us if you just put in the time and effort.
Tutorials can teach certain things better than I possibly can because I only use simple keyboard commands such as ctrlV/enter/delete/move up,dwn etc... ... that's it... I don't use or even know keyboard commands... it's all mouse choices with me except where it's not an option, then I have to use them. But really tuts I think are the best bet for someone like you, and like I say, you could end up learning how to do this better than any of us. But you must be persistent.
