How does this look?
I wanted to create the affect of a shovel inside a dark hole with a black bg. I think the shovel needs to appear more in the hole but not sure how to do this.
Some suggestions and opinions on what I have done so far are greatly appreciated.

Well, there are several ways to accomplish this, and some will have very different outcomes. This involved at least 25 different steps in PS and a few of the steps involved the use of a PS plug-in. I'd about have to write a book to tell you how I did it, and I'd even need to do it again and document my each and every step so that I myself could know how I did it. Not kidding. I just keep fooling with the tools until I start to see what I'm looking for.
The main thing is to keep fooling with those tools persistently, and become intimate with what they do. And if you ask me which tools are used to make a hole, I will not tell you, because it's not about what steps or tools are necessary to create a hole, it's about knowing what all the tools do, and using that knowledge in your own way, to make your hole.

Actually, I was just going over in my mind what the steps were that I went through to create this, and I can tell you that I was way low at 25. It was more like probably 75.
But the point I want to make is that all those steps were all second nature to me, and this is what is important, to reach a point where using the tools becomes second nature. This will require relentless persistence and practice.
Select the oval layer and just start going through every single tool, filter, adjustment, setting etc.. in PS, I'm not kidding. And do this over and over and over. Try to do a bit of something each day.

if it's going down a hole, then a gradient needs to be made and grouped with the shovel layer to show light dissapating. Maybe cut off a bit of the bottom of the shovel to show that it's passed the edge of the hole.

btw... i'm not trying to be snide or anything... but what kind of an answer is 'I know how to do it, but I'm not going to tell you'? Why not give him the answer and suggest that he memorize the program? I've been using PS for about 9 years, yet I still remember what it was like when I was first learning. scissors to the slack I say!

A rather lazy and selfish one.

You must be an expert then. 9 years ... gosh, I can't even imagine living that much longer.

I think the hole looks fine it's just the placement of the shovel. It does not look like it's inside the hole. I would do something like this.
It still needs a little more depth in the hole but it's a good start.

Thanks but I can't take the credit. All I did was move the shovel to a more realistic location.

I don't either really, I've been trying to figure out how to make it look more obvious.

Maybe lighten the background to a dark gray and have the hole black

Yes, and I would but he said "dark hole with a black bg" so I've been fooling around with it trying to stay with the black bg. I've made a few decent ones so far but am in the process of trying to perfect them ... then I'll have to decide the best way to add the shovel. This is proving to be more of a challenge than I first thought it would be. lol
