How do you make a border?

Ok, I'm trying to make an avatar, and I want to put a border around it and can get a border around it but its always just a flat border, I can't figure out how to make a good looking border.

I have a second problem as well, How do I resize the image to make it smaller without distorting everything? (I know Atom somethign with vector shapes in the adobe fill tool thread I posted but I'm doing something wrong and can't figure out what)

Any help with either of these would be nice, if not its fine... I'll figure something out ^_^

i think u need to flatten the image or merge layers before making the thing smaller, otherwise layer styles mess up.

regarding the border, if you want it raised (your complaint was that it's flat) then create the inside stroke of the avatar for the border, then bevel/emboss and choose stroke emboss.

What kind of distorting? Can you show an example of what happens?

Thanks davey. Not sure I know what im doing wrong but the border seems to look bad no matter what I do and PS is making me mad right now, so I'm gonna take a break and do some coding... Maybe I'll work on getting a good looking avatar... my problem is mainly that when I make it smaller I lose the text... Which is funny cuz in respect to your and my avatar the text is bigger so I can't quite figure out why it becomes impossible to read... it should be big enough, just most of the character disappears and isn't ledgible :X

I appreciate the help and I'll get back on later and try this again, at which point I'll actually show you what I'm doing ^_^ but for now it looks SOOOOOO bad I couldn't bare to make someone else view it

Edit: Jazzee the problem (as stated above) is that the text disappears into the rest of the image. Also the shield (since that's like the main part) doesn't look like a shield any more, it blends with the text also and just looks like randomness.

What steps are you taking to shrink it? Are you shrinking the original psd file?

I think so, I just go to image size, constrain proportions and type the size...

I've also tried doing save for web, 4-up, and resize in there but it always seems to come up looking poor (and unreadable!)

when u resize a gif, its gonna look like crap, open the GIF, select all (CTRL+A) then copy it and paste into a new image file, then resize and save.

I'm not trying to resize the gif, infact at no point in time has the image ever been a gif... I have yet to save it as any format other than psd. When I was talking about the save for web that was just cuz it was a tutorial I found on resizing images and wanted to make sure no one told me to do that ^_^

ok if it's a psd, go to Layer > Flatten Image and then try resizing.

Maybe you could send one of us the psd so we can see what's going wrong and try it ourselves.
