Hiya, my name is Erin, I'm 21 years old and I am pretty new to Adobe Illustrator CS. Right now, I am currently earning my degree in graphic design! Woot! Okay anyways, let me get down to my problem because I seriously need some help!
I’ve been learning about compound paths and subtracting from shapes with the pathfinder tools. My dilemma is this, I was asked to make a tie first draw a square and use the direct object tool to tweak it and then draw a smaller square to add to the top of the tie to give it a straight line across. That was easy…very simple just use the subtract tool after selecting both the objects. Okay, here is where I start pulling my hair out! I was asked to create a pattern of circles to use as a tie filler…a clipping mask, lock my polygons, create a pattern, unlock polys bring them to front.... I know how to do all that but when they asked me to create a compound path out of the both of my tie pieces, it doesn’t work

It says “Can’t make compound path. All objects must be paths, and they cannot be brushed or be part of an object” …
Am I doing something wrong when I subtract the shapes??? I can't think of what would be the problem. Anything you can do to help me would be much appreciated!
