Fireworks vs. Photoshop?
Do you think Fireworks is a suitable alternative to Photoshop for someone doing design work only on the internet, or would you suggest owning both?

They both have their strengths. Fireworks is not considered an alternative to Photoshop at all.
If you're only focus is design then you can do well with Fireworks and would probably get little use from Photoshop.
If you do need a basic editor, there are free applications and services you can take advantage of to do most of what you might need to do for online/web images so I wouldn't necessarily suggest Photoshop for that either.
So no, you wouldn't necessarily need both.

Photoshop seems to be able to do everything you are ever going to need.
I use Photoshop and have never once found something that I couldn't do in Photoshop that I would have been able to in Fireworks.
Obviously I'm sure such things exist, but for my personal graphic design I've never needed any other program.

You might want to take a look at Fireworks CS6 because it doesn't sound like you have a clue what it does.

Fireworks is mainly used to make animated banners and the file extension for that file is GIF, PS and Illustrator aren't capable of doing animated banners. While when you are into effects and high quality images, PS does the right job. And while you're after on vector images, illustrator is the right solution. Most vector images were saved as web images in the format of PNG files.

Photoshop is the industry standard. There is no second best out there because Photoshop really has a monopoly on this market - and there is good reason for that. It does everything perfect to the tee which is why so many pros aspire to it.

Fireworks was initially used for motion based images, this was before photoshop version 3 especially as it was not very good with moving images....so designers still use fireworks for banners and illustrations....photoshop now have become better with their animations but it is a choice which is open to us....both have their value, depends on the skillset of the designer in my humble opinion...

Even if Fireworks CS6 has many advanced features, Photoshop will always be a standard for computer and web design graphics. Many features of photoshop will really unbound all your creativity abilities. Photoshop also, on my experience has superb algorithms and tools for image compression, which is very important if you want to have a fast loading site. Another thing you must keep in mind is the batch processing feature. There were many times that I needed to change a bit, a website's brightness just a bit on all of my images.

Fireworks is too basic and a little old too. Photoshop is far, far more complete and even easier to get used to, as most Adobe products.
