I followed the tutorial for masking images at invano.com but I can't get in right. The best that I can get is this image. Can someone help me out here?

That is so not masking at all. That is deleting.

But, it looks like you put your rectangle selection too far to the right before you hit delete.

you put the rectangle to far to the right, second, you could just hit deleate a few more times to get red of that, or third you could just erase the area's with a very large earser tool to still get the fadded affect, easy

The retangle selection you drew on the image right before you hit delete. You need to put it further to the left so that you get rid of the edge of the picture of the girl and show more of her face.

I want to get rid of those white bars at the top and bottom of the picture. I followed the tutorial exactly but I can't lose those bars. Do I still have to change some settings for the rectangular tool or is this what everybody else also gets.

If I move the rectangle selection more to the left, than you can see more of the face but you still can see the bars.

Just use the regular eraser over the bars you see. Or make the rectangle bigger so it comes all the way to the left of the picture.
