Illustrator and Pantones

Hi guys,

I'm trying to get a better understanding of Illustrator and pantones because when I have passed files to a screen printer and they are RGB or CMYK, they always say to me "Give me the pantone reference" and I haven't a clue where to begin.

Any good tutorials out there on how this works/gaining a better understanding?

Thanks

Are you referring to add the Pantone colors to you files?

If so, select WINDOW > SWATCH LIBRARIES > Select Pantone type. This will bring up a dialog box that has all the Pantone colors.

Thanks, I have managed to get that far

So if I have a design on my screen and I need to pass it onto a printers, do I just write scroll over the pantone chart till I get a close match and write down the colour. e.g. PANTONE 356 CVC and thats all they require to colour match?

Pretty much the case. I would recommend using Pantone colors before you start the design so you will have a TRUE match. But everyone does things a little different.

EDIT: The reason you don't want to rely on the screen is that if the colors are off on the screen (unless you color correct the screen) you could potentially select the wrong pantone color. You may want to pick up a Pantone book to reference how the final product will print. It will make things much easier for you. An expensive buy but well worth it.

Thanks dude

Illustrator comes with 3 sets of pantone. Coated, uncoated and process.

Somebody suggested I mainly use the coated.
