I just use masks to not have to hit ctrl+z when I slip a little... or if an hour and 500 history states later I decide I want just a little of something back.

funny... what he said makes since, but someone with a really washed out monitor (or over bright) will see things that you don't catch, if you don't look closely as you repair stuff.

Sounds great to me... I love it when I learn to stop doing stuff the hard way.. ... I've spent countless hours with that damn erase tool, and I'm really glad to hear this about the masking... I'm going to start exploring it right away....

yeah i had an argument with w1k.. i just used standard black #000000 on something that was not pure black.. thought it was on my monitor.. they were like its a P.O.S. and I was like no its not.. they told me to adjust my monitor so I did and it looked like crap !!!

yes... I see what you mean now... I was thinking that most people would prob. have their brightness levels close to normal though but, not everyone I suppose .... and actually ... now that we're on the subject, I have had many TV/monitor repairs in the shop, where the people or someone would turn up the screens, drives, agc, auto brt, and even the master screen control, to get sufficient brightness for viewing due to a failing crt, where what happens is the cathodes of the three electron guns in the neck of the tube get a build up of oxidation, and the build up impedes electron flow, and reduced brightness is one of the major symptoms of this. But this is not as much a concern w/todays LCD and plasma monitors because their design allows easier regulation of luminance and brightness levels, so the circuits compensate for drastic, and even minor changes and more or less "keep themselves" at normal brightness levels.

spear,
that's funny, because that's exactly what happened to me back in the day... I've been checking every since.

so... you would have to have it way off to begin with ... and some people actually, believe it or not, like it overly bright.... more than you'd think... so yeah.... but masking is for reasons other than this also isn't it?

yeah I know what you man by that... but it does happen.
here I went ahead and made another version of his image.
"juggopop style", but this is the kind of thing you can do to repair.
one I faded out the burst all the way around to make sure no mistakes could be seen, then I just added stuff on top of that so incase they do have the brightness up, it will atleast look like I filled it. (which I did, just with dark colors for texture)
take a look...

masking is like ...
is like...
it's like erasing without being "forever"
it's for blending, replacing, tweeking and erasing... I use it in 90% of everything I do... even simple stuff.
It's like saying "what's the point in having layers?", "I can do it all on one and be fine." The point is, being able to know how to mask effectively is like the day you found out you could work on more than one layer...
does that make since?

I ment to do a bunch awhile back but never got around to it and then I had a ton of work slam on me... anyway...
take a look at the image below. I did this with masking.
I took the original, duplicated the layer, then on the new layer I drew over their faces to recreate the background... didn't have to worry about being neat, just needed to make sure that it looked right where their heads where (ie, if I went over the collar, shoulder, etc... it was fine)...
then when I was happy enough with it, I duplicatedthe first layer again, put it on top of the other two and then masked out their heads, what came through was just the background for the part that needed to be replaced, that way 98% of the original edge up to their heads was still in use, making it look more realistic overall... the reason I used masking instead of just erasing was that I could blend, redo and tweek alot better than just erasing and hopeing I did it right as I went (in masking I can bring back parts I took out without having to go back in history states... because it's still there, you just can see it, where erasing it, removes it from the file all together...)
anyway... have a look.

spear: funny
atom: tweeking (ie, being able to come back 600 history states later or two months later for that mater, and editing something that looks to have been erased because someone pointed out that the edge is not as clean as it should be... I can go back in and tweek it. even tweeking my blending of two objects together...)
