GIMP - How Effective?
How good and effective is GIMP in comparison to programs like PhotoShop which you have to pay for? I am quite novice with graphic design, and I downloaded GIMP for free. How much difference can a program like PhotoShop make compared to gimp?

I think my grandmother has got one of those in her garden. Eerie looking little fella.
j/k. She's dead. Garden's long gone. I haven't ever used Gimp before.

I use Photoshop myself, but do have GIMP installed and have looked at it. I think as a beginner you'll probably find most of what you need. A program like Photoshop will offer more features, but the basics will be in the GIMP.
In the end all image editing programs are tools and what you do with it is up to you. A talented graphic designer can create something beautiful with Paint, the default Windows image editor.

GIMP will work out fine for beginners. If it turns out to be too simple for you, you might wanna try Ulead PhotoImpact. It's more complex than GIMP but less complex than Photoshop. Highly recommended.

GIMPin' Along
I like GIMP. I have to say that I agree that photoshop is more powerful, but for most of what a person needs in the way of graphics editing, 95% is covered. I am a native Linux user, so i am of course also in love with CLI tools such as mpegtools and others. I sometimes enter all of my photos in CLI to string them as an mpeg, and then use a video editor such as avidemux to use some of the video editing tools it provides, and then resplit the jpegs. might seem strange, but it works for effects that PS can't touch.

Yeah, I also use GIMP and have been happy with it so far. I have Photoshop installed too, but haven't had anything come up that I really needed it for.

Gimp would be good if you wouldn't know anything else. Most people have tinkered with Photoshop so finding everything in Gimp is a bit of work. That being said, Gimp is a great program. If you have the patience to learn it.
