I use WisdomSoft's free ScreenHunter program. (It does everything that I need without having to buy their premium version.)

I was using SnagIt but the latest version isn't working well on this Win7 machine.

I found Greenshot via a computer software newsletter/website. It seems to work ok for a free program, nothing too fancy.

There is also Photoshop or PaintShop Pro that you could use via print screen and paste into any graphics program.

printscreen works best, then edit that with your favorite image editor, anything from paint to photoshop will work.

it depends from the screen resolution of your monitor, in the moment you press to take the screenshot.
