Transparency PNG's?

Is there anyway to make my png's have a transparent background in either photoshop or illustrator? (preferably illustrator). I know there has to be some way... I searched all over and no luck...

Any help would be very nice

As an after thought on .png files, Super PNG is a great replacement to photoshops png's. http://www.fnordware.com/superpng/

Hey C2C girl.....

The article from cricket is excellent but if you just want my words of wisdom in shorthand form.....:Photoshop)

Simply click File, Save for web...and it should bring up a window with your image in it and options on the right hand side.....

Click PNG 24 from the drop down menu

when selected make sure the transparency check box is checked

then simply choose save...

Thank you! I found out last night from my fiaance what my problem was... see I was using Frontpage to view my graphics after I made them transparent and that was my problem because the default browser was IE 6 ( it does not support transparent PNGS).... So I opened my NVU web program which has firefox as the browser and I saw that my graphics were transparent after all \o/ I updated IE to 7 just today... due to the incident. ..And here I was for months, never knowing the problem.
