free images for web designers
Anyone know where I can find free pictures to use on my website... I mean well known "LEGAL" sources... I dont want to be sued next year for a 45kb image that I forgot I was using...
I know of one source and thats at sxc.hu
Althought its a great site with many pictures I really require a larger variety.
P.S - WTF does the .hu extension stand for? Never heard of that one before.

.hu is Hungary i think.
It's really the best site out there for free stock images, they do run a paid service at stockxpert.com which has better photos and more variety but you pay for that priviledge.

what type of images are needed?
I will start a new thread for this, but what type of images are people looking for? Does everyone know that buying an image from iStock only permits you to use it once and not redistribute in a template?

I did not know that and I bet alot of other people do not either.
What kind of hosting would you need to create a stock image of say 1000 images? Would normal hosting support this?

I am not sure... I have someone looking into the hosting side of it for me... I am thinking of providing, say 150 high quality images per CD, or as a downloadable 500-700MB Zip file... I do not think the hosting aspect will be a significant challenge.
The bigger question is whether or not there will be enough demand for this to justify trying, I have a professional photographer that is going to partner with me on this, but if developers are ok paying $100 per image or just distributing regardless of the restrictions, then this type of product may not be necessary.

Some good, free photos can be found here: GeekPhilosopher.com
When it comes to very specific subjects, I've also found Wilkpedia useful for showing photos and images that are copyright expired or in the public domain.

I like istockphoto.com. Not free, but only $1. Sure beats digging through site after site.

I totally "second" this. At the end of the day, even with a large list of royalty free imagery providers, we almost always come back to iStockPhoto.com . . . . and not just because of cost; most of the time it's because we find what we really need.
