Graphic design program

Hi,
I am looking to find out if there are any software programs for graphic design that are useful to web developers who struggle with graphic design. I am not a graphic designer and find myself struggling with developing new graphics for sites I am working on. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd recommend Photoshop, but I think that Fireworks is easier to learn.

If you are doing static go with photoshop if you are doing animation go fireworks or flash. If you do very little graphic design then hire a graphic designer and save yourself the coin Neither are cheap programs.

Ya, fireworks is definately easier to learn, i learned it first, then moved to photoshop once i found out that capabilities are greater. So if you want to do high quality graphics and photo editing, go with photoshop, but if you want to just create simple but good graphics, use fireworks.

Gimp is a great free program.

Rizande, I like fireworks. I hate it for drawing, etc. but for doing animaton work it is really great.
