Setting up news print artwork

Ok so I was wrong to assume that every paper in our area were similar I can admit that. I have encountered a problem... Seems that a couple of newspapers are using something called an Old Goss Press from the 70's. I have called the artist and they seem to require halftone images with a line screen of no greater than 75-80. Also if you have a screened image it can't be below 35-40%. Does anyone have any experience dealing with similar problems. I really need to know what other types of problems I might encounter I hate having my work turn out like crap. Thanks

I've dealt with this with one color jobs but they weren't for newsprint.

The only thing I can tell you is info you already know. Stay away from gradients, don't expect halftones to look great and just take these jobs as opportunity to practice up on your typography.

That's what I did. Most photos should reproduce though. What exactly happened that made your work look so bad?

I was using a screen lower that 35% which did not reproduce well at all. The adjusting I did on the photograph was done using not only levels but brightness & contrast. I learned that when you use the Brightness/contrast that you are blowing out your dot pattern & you will get a lower quality reproduction. I had to spend sometime with this but I think I have it I have to send them 85 LPI halftone tiff files for best quality stay away from using brightness/contrast & keep all screens above 35%. Thanks for everyones help.
