Bitmap adjustment

Hi,
I have a premade logo that is in bitmap form. I want to be able to make the background transparent so that I can put the logo on a page with a dark background without a white box showing up around it. I have fireworks and I have photoshop. Fireworks I am very comfortable with but photoshop is brand new to me. Can anyone help?
Thanks

paste the image as a new layer on a transparent image, select the white background, with the magic wand on low tolerance (i think!) and press delete.

Make sure the tolerance number is low as well when you do what DaveyBoy suggested so that the ring does not drop the white shine portion as well. You could alternately use the extract filter

Best of luck with it.
