ok my take on the newer one
I kinda think it needs something else to the upper right of the picture. Don't really know why. The spider..... not sure I like the look of it in general the only thing I think I do not like of it is the front or back of it kinda looks a bit webbed therefore almost looking like a squid. The door is sweet I don't see anything I don't like about it. still not sure on the light in the door but the sign above the door fits great. :-) Thats my thoughts and suggestions I think the picture is definately getting there though. You really do have a talent.

I think it looks really good Atom
Perhaps a shadow behind the door on the wall may work. I don't know, try it out.

Gee I don't know, Ed, do you think a shadow would look right with that torch being right there?

Perhaps not that much of a shadow, and not that big a shadow, but just a fairly small one on the left side of the door.

Why are their shadow around the lights? wouldn't the background behind the lights be the brightest?

They're carbon deposits from the flames (hence the topic and composition title), like soot in a fireplace.
(soot: The fine black particles, chiefly composed of carbon, produced by incomplete combustion of coal, oil, wood, or other fuels.)
They both should have been just a bit higher I think, or the torches a little lower.

it doesn't look like carbon deposits though. make it darker, looks like shadows. if you have ever seen carbon deposits you will know that they are solid black, not translucent.

True yeah ... I'll fill all but the very outside edges solid, and see if that looks better ...

Well you may not believe it but, it's a plaque I made from this circuitboard ...
and the spider, I made from the pic below this, which is something I made a while back by scaling down multiple layers at 10% increments.
You will find that the star is a PS default custom tool shape. I added a brick pattern to the shape and created 60+ layers, scaling each successive one down 10%.

I created the door using the opening I created in the bkg texture with the "shift pixels" tool in "liquify"with a brush size of about 100 and a brush pressure of 100, by simply selecting the opening and distorting the shape with transform/perspective to give it a dimentional slant, then transform/scale and scaled it down horizontally to reduce the width to a size suitable to an aprox.120 degree opened door, then drew a line for the outer edge and added texture and different colors ...

Here is the texture (the wall) I started with, and cut the opening in with the reflection tool ...

I drew most of the spider web with the pen tool, and added some color and texture.
I created the flames using eyecandy, a PS plugin.
I appreciate all your suggestions and comments everyone btw ..
Thanx..
