Some users don't need a race car to go to wal-mart, but racers need a race car.

Haha, nice analogy So true. You had a lot of good points, Turbine. I love how fast I can open Paint Shop Pro and do things quickly.. Honestly, I open mspaint, paintshop pro, and photoshop at the same time and end up copying and pasting between them all. They all provide certain functions that I love and when all 3 are open I feel like I have the ultimate editing power.

Actually, when you think about it, it's the end result which counts, not what you used to get there.

This thread is asking a specific question: Between Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop, which is the superior graphics application? The end result is directly related to the user and the user's experience. We aren't talking about each individual's specific experience with any specific program, but we are talking about specific applications.
If that was the case, one could submit that a highly-trained expert in mspaint can produce better work than someone who is less skilled and is using Photoshop. Does that make mspaint a superior application to Photoshop? I don't think so. User skill cannot be taken into consideration when the question is asked, because the moment it is introduced the question becomes subjective and heavily vague. The end-result is what matters but that is irrelovent to an application's inherent features, precision, stability, utility and versitility.
Moral of the post: When you're wondering to yourself "What is the best tool I can use for what I'm doing?" it IS what you use to get to the end result that counts, because it will often tell you lots about the tool you're using! :]

Beyond a shadow of a doubt Photoshop is the better application, plus it's an industry standard. Anybody ever hoping to be a graphic designer had best get familiar with the Adobe family of products, just like if you want to work in print media you must know Quark express.

That's a great way to put it. I was worried that I was missing out using PSP instead of PS, but since I'm not a racer I don't need the race car.

Yes, you're right... my bad!
I also agree that PS is the better application even though I don't use it. I simply cannot justify the cost and time it would take me to switch. Perhaps when time and money are more abundant to me, I'll sit down and make the switch.

I say PSP if you're new, Photoshop if you have experience.

I prefer photoshop. It's very user-friendly. Editing and creating images can easily be done using this software.

Thanks again to everyone for your posts.
I just acquired a good digital camera, and with what I've been learning about PhotoShop I've created some simple artworks!
I still have a lot to learn about the program but I love art along with my music. So I am happy that I can now design my own CD covers and take my own pictures to do better with promoting myself.
I appreciate all the advice!

Photoshop is the only option really, Paint Shop Pro, is good for simple quick done effects, but a well veresered photoshop cs2 style person can do the same job just as quickly, but in photoshop you can take things to a whole other level
personally i just have both, ends the debate, i am a guy who says hmmm why have a pizza or chicken when i can have PIZZA AND CHICKEN

If you are going pro, you have to learn PS at some point. I don't use PSP, played with it a little, years ago. But if you have to prepare your work for a printer, you better be able to at least export in that format. I use both Corel and Adobe products for contruction of work for printers. PSP may be able to construction similar work, but if you can't produce something useable by the trade you better forget it.
