I agree with you on this. I think it will all depend on the artist!
I think that with the know how, great work can be achieved on
programs as simple as Paint or PowerPoint. It'll just depend on
our expertise and preference. I first started on Corel Draw in 1994
back in high school. I'm still learning. I'm better with a pen or pencil.
But I'm enjoying the features Photoshop allows. I lke to bounce back
and forth from paint, photohshop, and powerpoint.

A pen tablet costs about $80. But because I have a number of Serif products, they send me deals on other software. So just now, they sent me an offer on their pen tablet for $40. I like Serif software in general, not just because of the price and all the deals, but it is easy to use and professional level. I do not publish just on the web, but I do print to some extent.
Level of expertise is important. I have no problem coding in NotePad. But Serif is easy to learn even for the non-expert, and what it cannot do is for only top-notch professionals seeking a finesse that something like Time magazine needs. The exception may be WebPlus. I only tried the free version and it was horrible. They say the newest version is quite different. But I don't like GUIs, only text editors.

It would be nice to see some good Paint Shop Pro examples. I'd try it myself but I'm afraid I'll regress.

Now, if someone presented an exceptional piece of PSP work then I might not be so afraid.

Hog? Post as much as you like! I said it was OK. I want to make some good vector graphics before I post more. You're more advanced than I am, but when I make something I like I'll post it. You know how it is, sometimes we make things that we ourselves don't think are good enough.

I agree with you here. I guess some are just too afraid to share some of their work... (scratching head)

Yeah, I'm scratching my head with that one too, I don't get it. Oh well.

Actually, you should be able to find some samples at their web site. I like those found with the manuals, but I have to admit that PS manuals and tutorials use better samples. Nevertheless, what can be created by PSP or SPP is very professional, and easily can be at the level of PS samples.
However, I usually try out new software only when a deal comes along -- and then, I'm quite surprised. But the activation alone with Adobe products can be a challenge. Is it worth it?? Maybe, only for dedicated professionals in the publishing industry.

Actually, this is an unwarranted insult of other people. It certainly doesn't motivate me to post anything of my own work.

To be honest, I'm pretty sure that I could create a great graphic in PSP, I guess in the end that it does really boil down to talent and ambition.

I respectfully disagree as it is quite likely true, and not derogatory to any one.

Absolutely, but also objective. I do not have much talent in graphics, but I understand the principles involved as relating to communication. My focus, talent, and ability is in lines of argument (at least for certain subject areas), which I do not want graphics subtracting from, but neither can I avoid their use completely either. It gets into quite a philosophy figuring out when and how to use graphics, in print or on the web. But now we seem to be talking about drawing as well as photos. Uh...this could go on.

To say I am "afraid" to post samples of my work absolutely is derogatory. And to do so in the context of not considering other reasoning of why someone would not post samples only emphasizes the intent of such a comment. However, whoever originated the comment, do they have at least a degree in psychology, and can they cite scientific studies on people's motivation to sharing work samples? Either way, the comment was better left unsaid.

Yeah I know what you mean. I pretty much limit myself to artistic creation and manipulation.

Ok, I just looked the word up and I am going to have to agree. As to how big a deal it is, well, that's another subject.

Here is an example in the following post, not created by me, that was created from scratch in PS. I know how Wade created it from viewing a tutorial on his site, and I am thinking that this may be doable in PSP, but I'm just guessing as I know nothing about PSP, I've never even seen it.

Atom,
I did not find the link to your sample. If you have PS, I would not worry about getting PSP, unless it just came along. But like I said, I just like SPP for some reason. And I do not really use a drawing program, but I just downloaded Inkscape, and that looks very interesting.
Maybe the comment under review was no big deal, but it's like software, we all have our preferences. I think, maybe, this is a forum that I should visit and read but not post in -- but it seems like a nice forum overall.
