Save rounded corner rectangle as GIF and transparent background.

How come when i save a rounded corner rectangle as a gif with transparent background does the rounded corners look awfully jagged and unusable. What are the optimum settings for saving a Gif with a transparent backgroung so that all rounded corners look smooth.

Matt
The smoothness is affected by the background color. Have a play around with the "Matte" feature.

I use Paint shop Pro, where working with smaller graphics, especially rounded corners, can produce very noticeable "jagged edged" graphics. I usually try and make the outside pixel line a mid point between the graphic & the background, which helps soften the edge if there is a big difference of colour depth/brightness.

I'm always looking for better approaches, as I make a lot of web buttons, which sometimes look rough edged when you try the round edge approach.

You guys are awesome.

I used PNG format and the corners came out great. I wasnt using a background color and wanted it transparent and this did the job. I however recall that IE6 and prior versions of IE will not work with the PNG images with transparent backgrounds but this was fixed in IE7.

Im sure everyone is at IE7.0 by now though.

Regards,

Matt

Good post Matt!

Never really 'dabbled' much with .png formats. Could you tell me what the benefits are in comparison to .gif .jpg .tif ?

Well it will be replacing GIF's soon enough. The whole logic behind using GIFs was because they are smaller file size and they could have a transparent background and work in all browsers. Now everyone is on fast connections so size of graphics is not as important to some extent and now all browsers support PNG format which provides a transparent background to an image without the crisp cutout. Have you ever looked at some Gifs in photoshop and noticed the black background and the choppy outline of the image?

trust me png is better and great for all browsers now and excellent for importing into Flash also.

bye bye Gif.

Hey try this...

when saving the image as a .gif, (in Photo Shop) you'll get an 'index colour' menu.

Open - Options: Matte and select custom. you should be given a colour palette. select the colour closest to your background (where your gif will eventually be displayed).

Your gif should now have smoother edges, especially on that background.

This probably works i dont doubt you, but i am using this image on a background that differs in color. Basically it is a background image with differernt colors transitioning in the background.
