Digital camera photos for the web.

I am looking for some help reducing the size of digital camera photos for the web. The photos are coming in about width 2240 and height 1680. I am looking to change this to about width 500 and height 80 without distorting them too much. I am also need to make thumbnails. Any advice or links to articles would be appreciated

photoshop...

image >> image size.

the file size will likely be huge still though, so usually i would print screen it, paste it into MSpaint, crop it out and resave, makes the file size like 10% or so.

Actually thats a good tip for everyone

Huh, how bizare, how bizare. Well if hes going to change the size, best to do it in smaller increments each time, till you reach the desired size. Also make sure you viewing as pixel size.

500 X 80 will distort the image based upon your inital image size of 2240 X 1680.

Most applications will allow you to lock the aspect ratio so your height to width ratio does not change when resizing.

What I meant what is the best way to get down without distorting the image. A 2240 by 1680 image is impossible to get down to 500 by 80 with the constrain proportions on.

your only option would be to crop the photo (part of it) into 500x80. Or what you can do it create a new image that is 500x80 pixels, then paste the large image into it and move it around (the new layer) until you have in view what is desired.

You could also open the file, copy the actual image and then create a new document with the desired size in px then simply paste the copied image into the space...

what's with all the print screen biz?
just image size it to match the width of the new size,
use canvas size to match the height,
then unlock the bg layer,
move it around where you need it... what looks good to you in the canvas size left.
then use save for web to get the file size you need.

for the thumbnails.
in the file > automate menu
there is a thing called "web gallery"
it produces thumbnails and html for a web gallery of images you select...
trash the html and save the thumbnails it produces for whatever needs you have.

Tell you why...

You ever loaded a digi cam image into photoshop and saved as a jpeg? its HUGE file size. Save for web is all very well, but for me, my method is more effective.

So there.

yeah i know, so its still 90% of the original file size. print screening takes all the high res outta the pic i'm thinking, god knows anyway, but it works for me.
