Free Graphics Software
I use photoshop at home, but at work we don't have any decent graphics software.
We could arrange to buy Photoshop at work but it would be fairly expensive for the amount of use it gets.
All I need to be able to do is crop images using something like the straightline lasso tool in photoshop, and maybe add a few effects.
Is there anything free available that would do this?

Thanks, that looks like a decent piece of software. Have you used it before? How stable is it?

It's good enough for what you want to do with it, photoshop is still the best, but gimp is a pretty good substitute and it's free

It's stable and quite well-known and respected. Give it a test drive and post back here with your results. It would be interesting to get a take of a first-time user and whether it meets yor expectations.
Also, for general reading:

Gimpshop humps my face, but you can't beat a nice fresh warm copy of PS.

Use Gimpshop
If you're familiar with photoshop then you're best bet for free software is to use gimpshop. Gimpshop is based off of the popular Gimp but it was re-written to have a GUI similar to photoshop.
I have been using gimpshop on both XP and Vista without many problems.

In terms of free software the GIMP or inkscape if you want vectors are unbeatable. Otherwise pay for PS - pretty straight forward

GIMP is the best alternative of Photoshop (I haven't used it, but from what I read...).
