Question text in Photoshop

I have a question regarding text in Photoshop. I'm using version 6 and I would like to produce text that is "hollow." That is to say, that it isn't filled in with a color, only an outline of the letters would be visible. I would also like to be able to vary the thickness of the outline, if possible. If this is possible, then is it also possible to place other images behind the text and still be able to see them through the hollow text?

thanks

Normally I would suggest a Clipping Mask but I don’t know PS6. If there's such a thing as Clipping Masks for v6, do that.

Okay from what I've read, the clipping mask has been around since v6. So, do this.

-Open the image you want to use as the fill for your text.

-In your working file (canvas) write your text then drag your fill-image into that canvas. (of course you can get your text and fill-image together any way you want, this is just one method)

-Set your fill-image as the layer OVER the text. Make sure the fill-image layer is selected then hit ALT-CTRL-G.

edit....

oh and if you want a stroke around the text, just add it like you normally do.

-use stroke then turn the opacity of the text lower

The best solution I think it is the next one(but I don't know if is working in PS6)

-use outer glow, change between screen and normal to see the result (depends on the color or gradient you choose).
Then in the elements panel play with spread and size (the effect depend on the resolution of your document and the dimensions of the text)

-also the contour give some nice option, and you can make also a personal contour

Another option, although not so technical and may require a little bit of work still...is use your font that you want, and then rasterize the text layer, making it able to be edited, then use the eraser tool to erase everything inside of the outline, leaving you with just the the outline. Apply a stroke under blending options and set the stroke to outside. You'll be able to adjust how thick that stroke is as well. If I'm using the terminology correct it should work, but might be a bit more difficult with the more fancy/graphical fonts.

*Just would like to note I'm no PS guru by any means and have stumbled upon things by accident sometimes, this being one of them over the years...like I said, may or may not work, but worth a shot *
